Professor Dominic Jones from Cornwall received his undergraduate degree in Applied Geology with Law from the University of Plymouth and worked as an environmental geological consultant in England where he earned the Chartered Geologist professional qualification.
Professor Jones immigrated to Japan in 1999 with his wife, and switched careers to become an English educator in K12 education and a businessman. He started a company focused on the entertainment and education industries of Japan. After selling his business he continues a keen interest in startups and is a speaker at entrepreneurial events.
After earning a Masters of Education in Applied Linguistics in 2006 from the Open University he concentrated on teaching in tertiary education and was headhunted to start the English program at Sendai Seiyo Gakuin College which opened in 2009. He is a tenured professor in the Department of Contemporary English whose duties revolve around teaching English as a Foreign Language, researching, and supporting his college and students. His role in supporting the wider community includes being the Council Co-Chair for the Tohoku International School.
His research areas include the martial science of self defense, Comprehension based instruction of second language acquisition, and Neuro-Linguistic Programming Modeling. He has published multiple academic papers and has presented at international and regional education conferences in Japan including a TEDx Tokyo Teachers lecture on martial science education. He has taught empowerment martial science workshops in America, Australia, England, Ireland, and Japan.
He started learning the martial arts in 1989 and has continued to study and teach the martial arts ever since. He studied with the British Kenpo Karate Union ran by Bob Rose and then Kevin Mills until 2013 where he earned a Fourth Degree Black Belt in Ed Parker’s Kenpo Karate. In 2004 he began his martial science education with Kevin Mills until he became a personal student of Dr. Chapél in 2010. He earned his First Degree Back Belt in SubLevel Four Kenpo Concepts in 2014. Recently Professor Jones was promoted to 5th Degree Black Belt in American Tactical Chuán Fa under Dr. Chapél and formally elevated to the position of MSU Ambassador and MSU Director for Curriculum Development.
Professor Jones is the proud father of two children and lives with his wife in Sendai, Japan.
